Little did the poet Kuvempu imagine that we kannadigas are going to lie that stark dead one day that someone needs to wake us up. Its very clear today that we Kannadigas are dead, not just in the city of bangalore but anywhere on the surface of this earth!

I do see that most of us have concern about this ever declining influence of kannada in its own land. We talk about it at our gatherings, blame others for not being influenced by us, blame ourselves for not being fluent in our own language and go back to our normal routines the next day. I don't blame them, but then don't whine about the situation we are in. If we don't protect our culture & language, then nobody else does! In spite of all our concern for kannada, the inaction on our part to take steps to promote kannada language and culture has led to this great debacle of the language.

It has not been entirely downside for the promoters of kannada, but the fruition of their effort has been very little. I don't need to provide much proof than asking you to go around bangalore once or check out todays kannada movies or video albums or audio albums (in fact, there are not many to check them out). We did not invite this plight on to our land, but rather our inability to express our culture did. And at this point, we are not sure of our approaches to handle this situation, we just whine and wish we could do something to improve the situation. Some of us felt this sooner or later and made the issues known to everyone, published articles, gave lengthy speeches. My dear friend, that has not produced much results. We need some concrete steps.

What steps can we take? Can we just start imposing our language on others. Nope, that will not bring the results and that is unreasonable too. Infact that can bring undesirable results. We need to go back to the drawing board, understand the following basic issues, discuss & plan our course of action, and then take action to bring out the results.

  • How and why did kannada end up in this situation
  • What are the causes for this damage
  • What factors can change the situation now
  • What is needed to promote the language
  • What can YOU do to help

There are many factors to consider, discuss and act. The above list is just a beginning. At this point we really need to get together to determine our strategy/plan to handle this already collapsed plight of kannada. The path ahead is not easy, but that is our only way out. We need to get together to serve our language & culture.

I sense the vibration in your heart to contribute to your culture, to somehow promote your language. I don't like to see that vibration die. We all can pitch in our "2 cents" to make a unified effort. I understand, we are all too busy with our life to spend some time on doing social service like this, but do the best you can and there are the rest of us who will always be there to take it further. But, if you don't want to help then don't stand in our way, because some of us are determined to make this happen. We want to promote Kannada.

And hence we have organized an organization called, Promotion of Kannada in Daily Use or ProKiD.

Please join us if you are concerned about this, and together we can make a difference. We will make that happen even if you don't join us, but then you will miss this opportunity to be part of this proud movement !

We will be with you in this effort, even if you guys don't!
